Retro Special 1 - Siemens Gigaset 951

20081103_gigaset951.jpg
How it all began

Back in the 1980s, Siemens launched its first cordless phones for private households: the Megasets, which were based on the CT1 and CT1+ standards. These devices can no longer be used, since the frequencies expired in 1997. The successor standard DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telephony) was introduced in 1992, and 1993 saw the birth of the Gigaset family with the launch of the Siemens Gigaset 951. It was the first cordless phone based on the DECT standard, which offered digital voice quality, protection against eavesdropping and, for the first time, the ability to register more than one handset and conduct internal calls. The Siemens Gigaset 952 also allowed the connection of a fax or answering machine.

Siemens Gigaset tattoo? - iPhone s**k*

Hey you Siemens Gigaset zealots out there! How about a tattoo of your favorite Siemens Gigaset phone on one of your calves? I have to admit: Although I am working since ages for Siemens Gigaset now, I would not go so far to do this.
But some people are. At least in this respect, that they hate iPhones and to express this attitude they decide to purchase a life-size tattoo of the BlackBerry Storm on their leg... check the video above if you do not trust my words...

Good vibrations

20081110_vibrations.jpg
A cute idea comes from some guys of the Umeå University in Sweden. The team of researchers want to sync up events on a football field to vibrations in a telephone. It is meant to help concentrating on more important tasks like driving a car and not focussing on the display of your phone to watch the latest score of your favorite team while driving. The system shall generate vibrations within the phone which could act as a way of communicating possession, ball placement and (of course) gooooooooals.
Let us know when the technology is done, maybe Siemens Gigaset phones can be adapted as well.

How secure is your Wi-Fi network?

20081106_SiemensGigasetSE36.gif
Hopefully all you guys protect your Siemens Gigaset WiFi networks with either WPA or at least WEP. But beware of Erik Tews. This guy can hack your network within minutes. Tews is the guy able to crack WEP in even less than one minute. This was last year. At this time he advised people to change to WPA ASAP.
Now Erik claims that he can crack WEP in 12 to 15 minutes. He want to proof this next week at the PacSec Conference in Tokyo. If this turns out to be true we really have to think about returning to LAN networks...

Siemens gives up computer business

20081104_siemens.jpg
Restructuring within the Siemens AG continues: Fujitsu Siemens Computers is the latest case of the new strategy of Siemens CEO Peter Löscher. Under the pressure of a global economic turn down Fujitsu Siemens announced that it's acquiring beleaguered Siemens AG's 50 percent share of the joint venture for 450 million Euro (about $580 m). The partnership established in 1999 should be dissolved by April 2009, assuming of course government approval.

ECO Yacht

20081103_yacht.jpg
At the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show this "green yacht" was presented to the public. It promises to be eco-friendly because it uses a combination of diesel, solar and electric power. In this respect it is quasi a "Trybrid vehicle". The yacht can cruise at up to six knots with full solar power on a sunny day for an unknown period of time without any fuel and zero emissions. A nice feature is of course that in the solar mode you do not hear any noise from an engine. If you have to hurry up to go somewhere, its Parallel Hybrid System in diesel mode can fasten up to 13 knots. The price of $600.000,- is fair enough I would say...
Cheaper but also environment friendly are those Siemens Gigaset Eco-Dect phones... ;)

20081013_sl780.jpgSiemens Gigaset presents its new top-of-the-line phones, the Siemens Gigaset SL780 and SL785 (with an answering machine). For the first time, the handset?s frame and the charging cradle are made of solid metal. This unique design has already won the ?Red.Dot Honorable Mention? award. The two models also captured an ?IF communication design award 2008? for their ease of use: A new menu concept, the ergonomic keypad with metal dome technology and the large color display enhance the user-friendliness of these two top Siemens Gigaset products. A particularly ecology-minded feature is ECO mode Plus, which is being deployed for the first time: The base station only transmits signals when calls are actually being made.

New Siemens Gigaset product with Twonky MediaServer - available soon

20081013_twonky.jpgIn the year 1953 Arch Oboler directed the movie The Twonky. Philosophy professor Kerry West is surprised and upset when his new television set begins talking to him. The TV is actually a "Twonky", a device accidentally sent from the future. The Twonky's purpose is to make its users' life easier, and it sets about "helping" the professor by censoring his books, reading people's minds, and controlling his life. West struggles to find a way to stop the Twonky.

The company PacketVideo also wants to make users's life easier with its Twonky MediaServer. It enables you to share your multimedia throughout your home. It is available for many different platforms and interworks with a variety of client devices including XBox 360?, Sony PS3? and Sony PSP?. TwonkyMedia requires fewer resources and is faster than other UPnP media servers, and provides more features that help users enjoy large media collections. If you care about usability, TwonkyMedia is the right choice. It enables you to define your own personal navigation structure.

Read more details here: TwonkyMedia
Siemens Gigaset will release a product soon with an integrated Twonky MediaServer. I will keep you up-to-date...
