HiPath BizIP Operation behind existing Routers

From Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

HiPath BizIP is designed for direct connection to the Internet. The DSL modem is connected to the WAN port of BizIP AD 20. This allows easy set-up and avoids problems with NAT or Quality of Service and is the recommended configuration.
Only if special features of another router like VPN or WLAN have to be used operation behind a 3rd party router shall be used.

STUN protocol is used to provide the correct external addresses from the private address space behind the 3rd party router. Some providers like Broadnet and Purtel recommend not to use STUN, they take care of the IP Adresses by themselves.

The setup of this configuration requires experience in network administration!

Operation behind an existing Router with common LAN

HiPath BizIP is connected only at the LAN side. 3rd party router supplies IP Adresses via DHCP.

Please consult the administration manual for configuration details.

Operation behind an existing Router with separate LAN

The WAN interface of BizIP AD 20 is connected to the internal side of the existing router. For the BizIP phones a separate subnet is defined at the LAN side of BizIP AD 20. If necessary the logical subnets can be combined at one physikal LAN. In this case it is necessary to set up static IP addresses for one of the subnets.

Please consult the administration manual for configuration details.

General Restrictions

  • BizIP AD 20 takes care of prioritization of voice packets ahead of other traffic. It depends on the existing router, if this is also possible in its subnetwork.
  • BizIP AD 20 performs also traffic shaping in direction of the DSL-modem to avoid blocking of the link because of data caching. Usage of a router without this feature may result in decreased voice quality.
